ALL TOGETHER NOW showcases nine works made in the late 1960s by artist Barbara Strasen. These works show the beginning of Strasen’s practice of layering very different elements of charged imagery in a seemingly contradictory juxtaposition, tightly bound by an internal compositional logic. They invite the viewer to dig deeper and unearth a multitude of possibilities and burgeoning ideas about the self and the culture(s) we inhabit. They were first exhibited at Dilexi Gallery in San Francisco, (1958-1969), a gallery that represented ground breaking California artists such as Roy de Forest, Ed Moses and John Chamberlain, to name a few. The re-presentation by Long Beach Museum of Art of Strasen’s works from that seminal period creates a time capsule to consider how memories of the past and the cultural norms of the day have, or have not, shifted meaning.
